Episode Notes

5: This Blessed Earth

Linda and Nancy's mom was an Iowa farm girl! She and her family in Iowa were Linda and Nancy's introduction to family farming. After reading This Blessed Earth, Linda and Nancy realize they did not pick up as much about farming as they thought they did. They discuss all the complex decisions farmers make and the risks they take. Nancy, after living in Nebraska for many years and in her public policy work, was very familiar with the issues surrounding the Ogallala Aquifer, irrigation, and water rights, but this information was alarming to Linda and it reinforced for both how precious our water resources are for the future of food production. Linda and Nancy also talk about small towns and the way they know, remember, and love their own.
