136: Tiger’s Mouth

Oct 21, 2026

This episode we are talking about the novel, TIGER’S MOUTH written by Lucy Tan. This book is coming out on November 17, 2026, so this is an early preview. TIGER'S MOUTH is set in contemporary New York City. We meet three young adults, each with their own ambitions who become best friends one fateful summer that impacts their lives in different ways.

We first meet Jack Chen, son of a caterer, who bluffs his way into a prestigious internship at tech giant K.O. Systems. At K.O. Systems, his officemate is Jack Owens, son of the company’s billionaire founder, who would rather be dead than work for his father. Finally, there’s Jack Chen’s affluent girlfriend and budding opera singer, Caty Shangguan.

Nancy and Linny talk quite a bit about the characters, but the story also leads us to important questions, such as: what you lose when you deny your own past?

Nancy and Linny also discuss symbolism throughout the book: the author choosing to name the two characters “Jack;” the two tigers on the cover; and the move in the game GO, Tiger's Mouth, where a player basically surrounds and traps the other player.

Linny reports that of this year's books, TIGER'S MOUTH was the most of a page turner for her. She thinks it was the economic issues and the relationships. She said, “You don’t have to be tech savvy at all to enjoy this book!”

This episode we are talking about the novel, TIGER’S MOUTH written by Lucy Tan. This book is coming out on November 17, 2026, so this is an early preview of what you’ll love about this book. This book is set in contemporary New York City. We meet three young adults, each with their own ambitions who become best friends one fateful summer that impacts their lives in different ways. We have usually selected books that are more about female friendships, but at the core of this book is the relationship between the two Jacks. Linny liked all three of the characters and enjoyed that we learned the backstories of each one. Her favorite character was Jack Chen. Jack Chen is very aware that he comes from a lower status than Jack Owens or Caty. Nancy also really enjoyed Jack Chen. He’s what we used to call a striver. He really wants the success that comes from a high-paying job. He’s very willing to lie to get there. That situation posed the question to Nancy: what you lose when you deny your own past? She feels this creates a distance in his relationships and weakens a person. Linny wanted to see Chen integrate his background into who he is. This was a weakness for Jack Chen. He doesn’t recognize the love he grew up surrounded by. This is the opposite of Jack Owens who did not experience love, especially from his father. Nancy thought that the author choosing to name the two characters “Jack,” was a nod that they were mirror images of each other. Linny notes that the two tigers on the cover may also represent the two Jacks, but she hoped that it was more representative of external forces they face. Nancy thought the two Jacks were the tigers on the cover because the system they lived in pit them against each other, especially because of what they want out of life because each has something the other desperately wants. At points in the story, they almost assume each other’s’ lives. Then, too, throughout the book, we learn about a game called GO, that the Jack’s bond over loving. It’s near the end of the book that we learn that Tiger’s Mouth is a move in the game GO, where a player basically surrounds and traps the other player. Linny notes that the Jacks come together to trap someone else. At the end of the summer there is a big rift between the Jacks and Caty. Both Linny and Nancy feel Jack Owen suffered the most from the rift. He was such a fragile and fearful character. He had a lot of guilt for what happened to Jack Chen. Jack Chen was very resourceful and was agile enough to continue to pursue his dreams of success. One, heavy presence throughout the book is Keith Owens, founder of K.O. Systems. He, like Chen, came from a struggling family but through a force of will and a little betrayal of his own, became a billionaire. He is an unhappy man, despite his success. Linny found Keith’s parsimonious dealing out of information. She liked not liking Keith and she enjoyed watching Jack Chen and Keith Owens spar. Nancy observes that Keith is a manipulator in every relationship he has. Jack Chen learns to use Keith’s desires to succeed. Linny says Jack Owens also learns manipulation from his father and uses Jack Chen. Both Linny and Nancy enjoyed the book. Linny notes that of all the books we’ve covered this year, this one was the hardest to put down for her and she read it the most quickly. She thinks it was the socio-economic issues and the relationships. Nancy asked whether some of the tech business information was difficult for her. She said, “You don’t have to be tech savvy at all to enjoy this book!”
