Episode Notes

6: Dr. Don Wilhite talks drought in This Blessed Earth

Water, drought, and irrigation are some of the important issues Ted Genoways explores in his book, This Blessed Earth. In a time of climate change, agricultural producers in the Great Plains are faced with dire decisions about how to sustainably access water for their crops. In Nebraska, the Ogallala Aquifer supplies a much-needed source for groundwater irrigation; however, the aquifer must be managed responsibly so that Nebraska does not face the fate of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas where the aquifer has been depleted. We learn about the slow-moving crisis that is drought and about the efforts of producers, policy makers, researchers, and water managers to make sure we have water into the future.
