45: Max Out Mindset by Dr. Larry Widman
Nancy and Linda thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Larry Widman’s book, Max Out Mindset. In this book, Doc describes the 15 powers that he has observed in and helped develop in the elite athletes he works with. Nancy and Linda discuss positive psychology, one of the philosophies that under girds Max Out Mindset. Linda talks about positive psychology as a therapeutic concept and Nancy talks about her exposure to it in her MBA program and positive organizational behavior. The power of space, also a foundational concept in Max Out Mindset, comes from Dr. Viktor Frankl’s work, which is the space between stimulus and response, which is where our growth and freedom lies. Nancy also talks about Frankl’s belief that having a meaning or purpose allows us to overcome challenges. Doc categorizes the 15 powers into three categories: Max out your mind (the powers of high-performance mental skills, mindfulness, mindset, and grit), Max out your emotions (the powers of happiness, appreciation and gratitude, and vulnerability), and Max out your Team (the powers of positive teams, positive coaches, positive leadership, evolution, and ultimate trust). Nancy really resonated with the Mind and Emotions categories, but especially the Max out the Mind, which is where she took a lot of notes particularly in the Power of High-performance Mental Skills, the big four mental skill areas being: 1) goal setting, 2) self-talk, 3) visualization, and 4) arousal control. Nancy was surprised to read that we have 50,000 individual thoughts a day and, on average, people have three times as many negative thoughts as positive thoughts while elite performers have three times as many positive thoughts as negative thoughts. Nancy liked how Doc provided strategies in all these areas. Linda loves the mindfulness research as well as visualization. She talked about how amazing it is to watch elite athletes using visualization and benefiting from the power of it in any area of life. Linda recounts that as a young woman she wrote out her personal goals and referred to them everyday which was helpful to her to take positive steps to achieving those goals. Linda was surprised to read Doc’s stories that elite athletes are challenged with negative self-talk and confidence. Nancy talked about how she has used visualization prior to large presentations and in her current challenge in improving her tennis serve. Linda reminds Nancy that their high school band used visualization and that she also is currently using visualization as she is building her pickleball skills. Nancy reports that she has used the concepts from Max Out Mindset to build goals and process steps for tennis and her writing career. Linda plans to apply the concepts around self-talk in her pickleball playing. Linda like how Doc emphasized the importance of transparency. In fact, she loved everything about the book and couldn’t say enough about what a great book it is. Linda reveals her specific questions for Doc, next session, will be around the mental skills she can apply in her pickleball game, particularly since it is a fast-moving sport.
